Professor Irene-marié Esser is a Professor of Corporate Law and Governance at the University of Glasgow. Her research spans doctrinal and empirical approaches, covering the UK, EU and South Africa in the field of corporate governance, company law and corporate social responsibility. She also served as a Professor Extraordinarius at the University of South Africa (UNISA) and was, until 2017, a Visiting Professor at the Open University, UK. Since 2020 she is an Extraordinary Professor at Stellenbosch University, South Africa.
Overview
Corporate governance has evolved significantly since the early 1990’s with an increased focus on stakeholder engagement, the consideration of environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues during board decision-making and an awareness of board diversity and a corporate culture with mindful compliance of good governance rules and regulations.
During these training sessions various corporate governance topics are dealt with, from a legal perspective and within a regulatory environment, based on hard law as well as soft law approaches.
This course is unique as it provides the legal position, linking it to various soft law initiatives to ensure that the law is adhered to. These sessions have a comparative advantage as the presenter, a South African working in the United Kingdom for the past 10 years, is able to focus on the UK, SA and global positions.
These sessions can be tailored for various audiences including senior management, middle management, company secretaries, compliance officers and legal advisors. It can be offered as a lunch time session dealing with global developments and updates, as part of a company away day or as part of continuing professional development (CPD).

Format
The training format is flexible and can be tailored to suit your requirements.
The training will be conducted online and is globally applicable.
Various options are available depending on the depth and selected topics, like
- Lunch time seminars (1 or 2 hour sessions)
- Morning sessions (9-12pm)
- Full day sessions
- Longer courses, e.g. 6 sessions of 2 hours each.
Each course includes:
- PowerPoint slides;
- A Handout with outline of session, discussion questions, list of sources;
- Some practical breakout sessions to discuss a specific issue/problem (especially in longer sessions).
Certification
When booking through the Good Governance Academy, all attendees will receive certificates of attendance.
Our certificates of attendance are used by most professional associations for continuing professional development purposes.
