The “Advances in Corporate Governance” is a new academic journal focused on providing thought leadership on critical business issues, specifically within the realm of good governance, ethics, and sustainability. It is a collaboration between the Good Governance Academy and Wits Business School, with AOSIS serving as the publisher and host of the journal.

The journal welcomes contributions from both academics and practitioners. It is interested in a wide range of topics related to good governance, including outcomes-based governance, conscious and responsible corporate leadership, sustainability and sustainable value creation, integrated reporting, digitalization, organisational culture and ethics, and operational performance. The editorial team encourages analytical, theoretical, and practitioner perspectives, aiming to bridge the gap between theory and practice.

All published articles in the journal are available to readers free of charge without usage restrictions, aligning with the open access model. The copyright remains with the authors. While there are currently no fees for authors to submit articles, publication fees may be introduced later, though sponsorship is being sought to potentially cover these costs for contributors.

The journal accepts various article types, including editorials (expert commentary on relevant topics), original research articles (structured overviews of innovative research), and review articles (synthesis of recent significant advances, often exploring unresolved questions and future directions). Review articles are particularly suitable for practitioners to share insights from their day-to-day challenges and dilemmas.

The journal encourages submissions from practitioners and has a process in place to support them. Authors should refer to the author guidelines available on the journal’s website. The editorial team is available to provide recommendations and suggestions to help submissions meet the journal’s guidelines. There are also resources and support available for navigating the submission process, including formatting and other requirements.

Before submitting, potential authors are encouraged to review the detailed author guidelines on the journal’s website. Key requirements include formatting guidelines and obtaining an ORCID (Open Researcher and Contributor ID). The ORCID is a persistent digital identifier that verifies the author’s identity. Registration for an ORCID and then registering as an author on the AOSIS platform are essential steps in the submission process.

Indexing involves external bodies evaluating journals and providing a mark of quality. Prominent international indexes include the Web of Science, Scopus, and the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ). Accreditation, like the one provided by the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) in South Africa, signifies recognition, often making published articles eligible for research subsidies for affiliated authors. Both indexing and accreditation are crucial for the journal’s academic standing and to incentivise contributions.

To be considered for indexing in the DOAJ and potential DHET accreditation, the journal needs to publish a minimum number of original research articles or equivalent, aiming for at least 10 by August 2025 to apply in September 2025. The journal publishes accepted articles continuously online as they become ready, not waiting for a batch. Achieving DOAJ inclusion is the initial target, which can pave the way for DHET accreditation and potentially inclusion in other international indexes like Scopus and Web of Science as the journal grows its content and citations.

Sezer Bozkus Kahyaoglu

Associate Professor of Finance at the Bakirçay University

Sezer is an Associate Professor of Finance at the Bakirçay University, in Izmir, Türkiye, and an academic associate of the University of South Africa (UNISA) and the University of Johannesburg. Her research interests mainly include Applied Econometrics, Time Series Analysis, Financial Markets and Instruments, AI, Blockchain, Sustainability, Corporate Governance, Risk Management, Fraud Accounting, Auditing, Ethics, Coaching, Mentoring, and NLP. Sezer is the associate editor of two indexed journals and the AI book series editor at Springer. Sezer is a Steering Committee Member at the Good Governance Academy Research Forum and a co-founding member of the registered Engaged Scholarship project, Continuous Auditing in Public Sector Internal Auditing (CAPIA).

Dr Jenika Gobind

Senior Lecturer: Human Resources, Wits Business School

Dr Gobind’s research interest lies in employment relations.  Her teaching and learning experience spans over 12 years at a number of institutions.


After obtaining her BProc (Law) from the University of Durban-Westville, she lectured at Durban University of Technology in various legal subjects between 2005 and 2009. She then shifted focus to employment relations, human resource management, monitoring and evaluation (M&E) and research methodology. She completed a Diploma in Employment Relations through UNISA, Postgraduate Diploma in Industrial Relations Management from the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) and a Postgraduate Diploma in HIV and AIDS Management from Stellenbosch University (US).  She obtained her PhD in Employment Relations at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) in 2014.


Prior to joining WBS, Dr Gobind served as Head of Research at Milpark Business School and lectured in employment relations, collective bargaining and negotiation, and monitoring and evaluation (M&E) at UJ, as well as extensive research supervision at Master’s and Doctoral level.


Dr Gobind’s other research interests lie in gender discrimination and HIV/AIDS in the workplace. She holds an MPhil in HIV and AIDS Management from Stellenbosch University.  Widely published, her books include South African Employment Relations in Context (Knowledge Resources, 2015) and HIV/AIDS Fact File (South African Board of People Practices, 2012).


Dr Gobind has extensive experience in the private sector, chairing multiple disciplinary hearings and consulting in labour legislation, employment relations and HR issues.  At Transnet Freight she trained the HR managers on employment relations and HR management. She has also contributed extensively to the Higher Education Sustainability Initiative (HESI) and the University Research Company (URC) in research and the development of local and international publications on HIV/AIDS, TB, leadership and management.

Carolynn Chalmers

Chief Executive Officer, Good Governance Academy

Carolynn Chalmers is the Chief Executive Officer of Professor Mervyn King’s Good Governance Academy and its initiative, The ESG Exchange. She has edited two international standards: ISO 37000:2021 – Governance of organizations – Guidance and its associated Governance Maturity Model, ISO 37004:2023.

 

Carolynn makes corporate dreams come true, assisting leaders and leadership teams in how to create value for their organisations. She makes use of her expertise and experience in corporate governance, organizational strategy, Digital Transformation, and IT to do so.

 

Carolynn is an Independent Committee Member of South Africa’s largest private Pension Fund, the Eskom Pension and Provident Fund, and recently retired as Independent Committee member of several board committees for the Government Employee Medical Scheme. Carolynn has extensive management, assurance and governance experience and has held various Executive roles for international, listed, private and public organisations across many industries.

 

Carolynn is best known for her successes in establishing governance frameworks, and designing and the leading large, complex initiatives that can result. She attributes this success to the application of good governance principles. She shares her insights on her 2 LinkedIn Groups – Applying King IV and Corporate Governance Institute.

Dr Lindie Grebe

Senior Lecturer, College of Accounting Sciences, University of South Africa

Dr Grebe is a chartered accountant and senior lecturer at the University of South Africa (Unisa). 

 

She teaches postgraduate accounting sciences through blended learning using technology in distance education, and through face-to-face study schools throughout South Africa. During her employment at Unisa, she also acted as Coordinator: Master’s and Doctoral Degrees for the College of Accounting Sciences (CAS), chairperson of the research ethics committee and chairperson of the Gauteng North Region of the Southern African Accounting Association (SAAA). 

 

Before joining Unisa as academic, she gained ten years’ experience in audit practice and in commerce.
